Recently RugbyPass released highlights which show Rupeni Caucaunibuca’s tearing it up first season in pro rugby for Northland back in 2001.
Fijian Flyer, Rupeni Caucaunibuca was considered one of the fastest players in rugby union at the time. Footage released by RugbyPass, shows just how menacing Caucaunibuca was for Northland. The highlight reel shows Caucaunibuca tearing it up for Northland, in his first season at just 21 years of age.
Caucaunibuca, at the time when first joining Northland, apparently had very little English too. This makes the wingers’ transition from Fiji to playing in New Zealand even more impressive.

The highlight reel shows the incredible performances given by the Fijian Flyer which earned him a spot to sign with the Blues. From there, he went on to represent Fiji at two world cups, where his name really became known worldwide. Rupeni Caucaunibuca is mesmeric to watch. In just the footage of him playing for Northland alone, he was a threat every time he touched the ball. He could score from anywhere.
In the video game, Rugby 08, Caucaunibuca, had one of the highest speed ratings in the game. His speed rating, apparently close to maximum at 97 out of a possible 99. His rating, very reflective of the gas he showed for Northland back in 2001.
According to RugbyOnslaught, Caucaunibuca did have the maximum speed rating in EA’s Rugby 06.
Following his time in Super Rugby, Rupeni Caucaunibuca went on to have a successful career in France making 113 appearances for Agen, scoring 65 tries. He also had a brief stint with giants, Toulouse, making 13 appearances and scoring 5 tries.
