South African Rugby’s Varsity Cup is, quite frankly, one of the most exhilarating competitions to follow on the rugby calendar.
Consisting of the top university teams in the country, the Varsity Cup lives up to its moniker of ‘Rugby That Rocks’.
This slogan could not have been more apt than yesterday’s clash between the UCT Ikeys and UFS Shimlas.
Following 80 minutes of pulsating rugby action, the scores were locked at 42 apiece.
With the clock firmly in the red, the Shimlas were awarded a penalty that would settle the contest once and for all.
As flyhalf Ethan Wentzel stood over the kick the tension in the stadium was palpable as everyone was fixated on the playmaker. Everyone except for the Supersport’s camera operator that is…
In what will go down as quite possibly the biggest filming blunder in rugby history, the camera inexplicably shifted from Wentzel to the ground whilst the kick was underway.
As the ball pierced the uprights and Wentzel celebrated with his teammates, the cameras finally returned to him.
Of course, the incident did not go unnoticed and has become a major talking point online today.
