Springbok secondrow RG Snyman is one of modern rugby’s truly unique athletes and has become one of the key players in the back-to-back World Champions squad.
Standing at a shade under 7th tall and tipping the scales at over 130kg, the 29-year-old Leinster lock is about as close to a video game ultimate character that one could create.
Few fans who followed the past two World Cups will forget the image of Snyman trotting onto the pitch as part of the now famed ‘bomb squad’ and simply obliterating opponents with his raw power.
This role as the ultimate impact player who enters at the back end of contests is a reminder of just how much depth the Springboks currently possess.
Getting a rare start over the weekend against an up and coming Portuguese side in Bloemfontein, Snyman served a reminder that he more than has the capabilities to perform across a full eighty minutes.
Carrying on a whopping 13 occasions for 24 meters with one line break and an off the charts five offloads completed, Snyman utilised his long reach to deadly effect to put his teammate’s into space.
Combining this skillset with a hard edge, Snyman is the perfect lock for Tony Brown’s uptempo attacking gameplan.
Away from the flashy side of the game, Snyman’s hard edge was on full display when he took on half of the Portuguese pack in a rather comical sideshow.
