New Gloucester signing Zach Mercer has had an incredibly impressive start at his new club Gloucester since joining from Montpellier at the end of last season.
His future is now looking rather uncertain, however, after suffering an ankle injury in their defeat to Gloucester just a couple of weeks ago.
It is understood, by Gloucester live, that the former Bath number 8 is due to undergo surgery on the injured ankle, following a scan he underwent at the back end of last week. The results of the scan were reportedly analysed by specialists who determined that surgery was the best course of action. No recovery timeline has been released, however.
Mercer has been in fine form for the West Country based side since joining at the start of the season, and was even nominated for the October Premiership player of the month award.
Many fans were expecting the back row player to be pushing for an England spot in the upcoming Six Nations, but depending on the length of his time on the sidelines, that could be an opportunity taken away from him.
